Automatic Cross-reference Type Assignment What SKY Software's testers have said about this new feature... Tester #1: "When you first introduced the automatic cross-reference feature, I was intrigued, but thought "I'll never use that. I make the decisions here, not some damn machine." I was aghast when I read that it might not be possible to turn it off in the future. However, as I tried it and became familiar with it I began to appreciate it, and now I rely on it completely and would never go back to assigning cross-references manually. And yes, it turns out that deciding between "see" and "see also" is indeed an automatic process; it can not only be carried out by a machine but (like driverless cars) is often better carried out by a machine that cannot make a mistake or overlook something." Tester #2: "I was skeptical about this feature. I'm the one who makes the decisions about what's in my indexes. And yet, I have also at times seen -- particularly when updating a previous index for a new edition -- that I make mistakes. I was annoyingly vocal to Kamm that this couldn't possibly work. But it does. And SKY makes this choice better than I do. The rules on when to use 'see' or 'see also' are clear and SKY does not violate those rules. It applies the rules better than I do! … I'm not going to put 'see' or 'see also' in any index ever again." Create Reciprocal Cross-reference |
